Googlebase versus Microformats

False dichotomy? Read/Write web today talks about GoogleBase and observes

Google is making some bold moves to bring structured data into the mainstream search box. And in the process, it appears to be running over the top of microformats, the Web community’s open standards for structured data

Is there really a dichotomy here? Do GB and uf compete? Is there only place for one way of doing structured data? I really don’t have time to address this, with Web Directions on this week. But I hope to address this soon.

Well, there is authentication in front of GData, so that does create something of a dichotomy for now.

    Hi Chris,

what I was trying to say with reference to the false dichotomy, is that I don’t think it is an either/or - there are things that GB provides which uf doesn’t which will make it the compelling technology for some applications - authentication is an example of one such. The opposite will be true too- aspects of the nature of ufs will make them the better solution to certain problems.

    Thannks,
