Happy birthday microformats.org

The other day, as you no doubt have read elsewhere, Microformats.org, the home of the microformats community turned 2. Though they’ve been round a little longer than that, the success of microformats in just a couple of years is indeed impressive.

You can read roundups by Tantek Çelik over at microformats.org and Chris Casciano at his blog, while Tantek also has some thoughts about what lies ahead at his blog.

Some of the milestones and significant achievements in my opinion are

Brian Suda’s PDF book on microformats for O’Reilly’s shortcuts series
Brian’s X2V project - which converts hCard and hCalendars to vCards and iCalendars, enabling the seamless interoperation of web based content and desktop apps like AddressBook, and iCal.
Three great Firefox extensions, for discovering and interacting with microformatted content in web pages - Tails, Operator and Webcards
Yahoo’s extensive use of microformats at Local, Tech and more.

Of the “smaller” publishers of microformats, Magnolia has really caught my eye. Their website really is their API. The use all manner of microformats, and I hope to finally get round to a review of how the site uses them soon.

This is just a tiny smattering of the many amazing things happening in and around microformats. Love to hear your thoughts on what most excites you about microformats.
