    Read this yesterday (including all comments) - seemed pretty heated there for a while.

    I understand their concern, but at the same time I understand that the abbr tag really is the best (semantically) for the job to describe its contents. Using a span seems to remove that association.

    I know Jeremy was very active in the conversation. What are your thoughts? How do you think it could be solved?

    how is the abbr tag more semantic than the object element?
